Fresh Rumors: iPhone 5 To Have Metal Back, NFC?

More scuttlebutt about the iPhone 5 just surfaced, with rumors of a metal back and near-field communication capabilities heading the list.

No more glass back? If rumors are true, the iPhone 5′s dorsal side will evolve into a metal back similar to the very first iPhone (that’s not a picture of the iPhone 5 above — it’s an iPhone 4 with a metal sticker on the back). That’s according to a reliable source at Foxconn, the Chinese manufacturer that builds iPhones and such, who tattled the tantalizing tidbit to 9 to 5 Mac.

Notice we’re not saying what kind of metal it is. It could be aluminum, but there’s also talk of Liquidmetal, that futuristic substance that’s as easy to work with (and as lightweight) as plastic, but strong as aluminum. A few weeks ago we gave Liquidmetal a 10% chance of appearing in the MacBook Pro, and we’re still thinking it’s a little soon for it to appear on the iPhone. We’re betting on aluminum for the iPhone 5, with Liquidmetal making its appearance in a later version.

Incidentally, 9 to 5 Mac is again hearing those rumors about a larger screen on the iPhone 5, but its sources are not as specific about the size of the screen as those who reported to DigiTimes that the iPhone 5 would have a 4-inch screen. Given all the chatter about a larger screen — and the increasing screen size of the iPhone’s competitors — we’re thinking it’s likely that the iPhone 5 will have a significantly larger screen that probably stretches out from one edge of the iPhone 5 to the other.

What about NFC? An on-again/off-again rumor of the iPhone 5 containing near-field communication (otherwise known as “wave and pay” chips) has now returned. Earlier in the week, the scuttlebutt was that Apple decided against including NFC in the iPhone 5 because of worries about the lack of a clear standard for NFC.

Now we’re hearing something different from Elizabeth Woyke of Forbes magazine, who says an Apple employee leaked information about how the iPhone 5 will have NFC. If it does, it will probably link its payments through iTunes, and given Apple’s reluctance to jump into the NFC fold because of a lack of standards, embrace some sort of proprietary technology that the company hopes all others will follow.

CHINA NEEDS IPHONE

Fortune summarizes a MorganStanley survey of 3G mobile phone users in China and discovers pent-up demand for iPhone. Lots and lots of pent up demand. 

The survey, conducted among a sample of 2,029 Chinese mobile phone users in February and March, found demand for smartphones to be surprisingly strong. 88% of respondents said they expected the next phone they bought would be a smartphone. And 30% of those who planned to buy a 3G phone said they expected to buy an iPhone, even at its current price. If price were not a consideration, that number would jump to 53%, according to the survey.

Given the size of the market, the 3% or so of respondents who said they planned to buy a Blackberry is good news for the other company that controls both its hardware and software (no, I no longer count Nokia here). But that’s neither here nor there. What I find most interesting, however, is the chart that shows what features and functions survey respondents are most interested in.

Apple has made it known that they are very focused on growing their business in China. I suspect that what the Chinese want, they will get. Consider the recent iPhone ads. It’s all about:

  • covetousness and branding (if you don’t have an iPhone, you don’t have an iPhone)
  • screen (“retina display”)
  • battery (“lithium polymer battery”)

We may or may not get a iPhone 5 this year. It may or may not have any appreciable design changes. I do think, however, that we will definitely have a far more robust iPhone experience and improved battery. Possibly, a better screen, though less likely.

I think the big “future of IOS” talk at this summer’s WWDC will, instead, touch on those issues of great concern to China’s future iPhone buyers. Think: iOS and its payback, over hardware and payload.

  • Faster response
  • Improved multitasking
  • Longer lasting

I’m expecting a lot more Apple ads, particularly with lots of smiling Chinese faces. And in these ads, Apple will happily remind us that they are not special. Rather, you — with an iPhone — are special.

A QUICK FIX FOR THEIR IPHONE APP

Jack Dorsey, the inventor of Twitter, is back at the company focusing on product, and has ambitious goals like making the service easier to understand and use for normal people, which is great.

But Dorsey is nothing if not a detail-oriented product visionary, so here’s a small product detail that he should pay attention to and fix. It’s not much, but it’s really annoying and a poor user experience — exactly the kind of thing we imagine Dorsey won’t tolerate.

It’s a bit tricky to explain, but bear with us.

Twitter’s official iPhone app lets you email tweets. I use that feature very often, because I often email myself links that look interesting. So far so good.

The problem, however, comes from the way Twitter now shortens URL. On Twitter’s apps, its official URL shortener t.co doesn’t display URLs as http://t.co/XYZ but as the original URL, shortened. So a link to http://www.businessinsider.com/clusterstock might look like this: businessinsider.com/clust… Again, good: instead of an undecipherable bit.ly link, you can have at least an idea of where you’re being pointed to.

Here’s where it goes wrong: when you email a Twitter-shortened link, the link in the email points to the shortened version and not the actual URL.

For example, this morning we emailed ourselves a tweet to a blog post by Twitter investor Bijan Sabet, and here’s what it looks like in our inbox:

The URL to Sabet’s post is http://bijansabet.com/post/4220407806/sensitive-vcs-or-something-else. If you click on the link from inside Twitter’s app, the shortened link takes you there. But the link in the email takes you to http://bijansabet.com/post/422040780 which is a page that doesn’t exist.

See? It’s not a huge deal, but it’s annoying when it happens and it would be pretty easy to fix. The reason why this happens is because the “email tweet” feature in the iPhone app was implemented before Twitter’s new URL shortener, and (I assume) because Twitter employees don’t email tweets.

It’s the kind of small mistake that tends to slip by when you have an unfocused product organization without strong direction, which seems to have been the case with Twitter for a while. And while things like this aren’t a big deal, if there’s enough they can add up to an overall user experience that turns off people, especially the non tech savvy normal people Twitter so covets.

Now, it’s not like running an actual business of course. It’s not even a new concept, there are a lot of games like this. You can make and sell pizzas, cupcakes, sandwiches and now hot dogs. If running a restaurant isn’t your thing, you can do something non food related such as fixing cars. So it’s not an original idea for game play, or even for a business idea, as you can also sell hot dogs on other apps.

Crazy Hot Dog is fun and fast paced, and will take you a few minutes to get the hang of it. The setup is similar to a lot of these games. When you open up the app, it tells you the story of why you’re running a hot dog business; you are challenged by a mysterious stranger that has some money and wants you to sell hot dogs. I’m not sure why there is always some kind of story in the beginning. Couldn’t it be that a guy running a hot dog business just wants to sell hot dogs? Either way, they still tell you why you’re doing it.

It’s pretty straightforward: you have to grill the hot dogs, and sell them to the customer. To grill them, first you put them on the grill, then you have to continuously pump gas into the grill or your dogs won’t cook. (I’ve never seen a grill that works this way, but I guess they have to make the game interesting somehow). They light up and you flip ‘em. Light up again and they’re done. Don’t take ‘em off the grill to soon or your customers will complain about frozen dogs, burn ‘em and they’ll make a face that basically tells you that you just fed them the most disgusting thing they’ve ever eaten. But do it right and for the most part they’re happy. There are different modes, such as tailgating and street level, but basically it’s the same: you’re just throwing hot dogs on the grill, and serving customers. As the game progresses, you’ll have more customers, and they’ll be more impatient and meaner, but that’s the nature of the games. Just keep serving them and they’ll keep coming back.

If you like these types of games, this is a good one. It’s easy to start playing and once you do you can’t stop. It’s good graphics and the sound effects are great, so I would definitely recommend you give it a try.
